Newsletter 2026 V2 Article - Ask A Money Guide
A: It’s unsettling to receive scam calls or texts, but in most cases, it does not mean your account is compromised. Scammers often use automated systems to dial or text large batches of numbers, pairing them with real institution names found through public records, online directory listings, social media, or even data from previous unrelated breaches. They may not know where people have accounts, but if they name enough local or regional institutions, eventually they’ll reach an account holder. When someone replies back to a text or phone number, scammers try to gain access to account information or even your online banking credentials.
Please know that UMassFive will never call and ask you for your online banking user name or password. If you receive a suspicious call, text, or voicemail claiming to be from your financial institution, do not engage. You should hang up, delete the message, and make sure not to click provided links or call back the number provided. Instead, look up our phone number and call us directly or message us through Digital Banking.
That said, if you’ve accidentally shared sensitive information, such as your account number, login credentials, or one-time passcodes, or if you notice any unusual account activity, call our Contact Center immediately at 413.256.5500, or make a branch appointment for fraud. Members can also submit screenshots of scams through Digital Banking.
